How To Prevent Hyperpigmentation

How To Prevent Hyperpigmentation

If you are prone to hyperpigmentation and notice patches of darker pigmentation on your face, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Hyperpigmentation is common, and you can take steps to reduce it. Here at Sea Active Skincare, we are sharing a blog post discussing how to prevent hyperpigmentation. If you want to know more, keep scrolling to find out.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation, also known as skin pigmentation, is when certain areas of the skin become darker than the rest. It is common among different skin types and can affect small areas, larger areas of the body, or, in rare instances, the entire body.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin than usual. Melanin is the pigment responsible for giving the skin its color. Excess pigment is deposited underneath the skin, resulting in darker areas than the surrounding skin.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Here are the common causes of hyperpigmentation:

  • Sun Damage: Harsh UV rays can harm your skin and are the number one culprit of premature skin aging. One symptom of sun-damaged skin is hyperpigmentation in the form of age spots due to long exposure to the sun.
  • Chloasma: Also known as melasma, these are dark patches of pigmentation commonly found on the face. This condition indicates hormonal changes and can occur in pregnant women, often referred to as the mask of pregnancy.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: This can occur when the skin experiences an inflammatory phase like acne or eczema. After healing, the skin can develop darker spots.
  • Medical Problems: Some medical conditions, such as Addison’s disease, can cause hyperpigmentation as a symptom. If you are unsure what caused hyperpigmentation in your body, consult a medical doctor or dermatologist.

How to Prevent Hyperpigmentation

Although some cases of hyperpigmentation cannot be prevented, you can take steps to reduce the risk. Follow these tips to help prevent certain causes of hyperpigmentation:

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight Exposure: Stay out of the sun during peak hours from 10 am to 2 pm. If unavoidable, use a UV-protected umbrella or stay in the shade when outdoors. Wear long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses with UV protection to keep your skin safe.
  • Wear a Hat or Cap: Protect your face and scalp from sun exposure by wearing a cap or a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Apply Sunscreen – Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 20 and apply it daily, even during colder months, to protect your skin against harsh UV rays. You can use Skin Guardian SPF 20 daytime moisturizer, which acts as both a moisturizer and a sunscreen.
  • Avoid Touching Your Skin – Scratching or picking at your skin can introduce bacteria and cause inflammation, leading to dark pigmentation when it heals. If you need to touch your face to apply skincare products or makeup, ensure your hands are clean by washing them with mild soap and clean running water.
  • Use Vitamin C-Rich Skincare Products: Vitamin C is an antioxidant with skin-whitening and anti-aging properties. It helps neutralize free radicals and reduces damage caused by sun exposure. Try C Rescue Pigment Relief Serum from Sea Active Skincare. This skincare product contains seaweed and vitamin C. It aids in skin cell regeneration, moisturization, collagen production, and improvement of skin affected by sun damage and pigmentation. To use, in the morning, wash your face first. Then, use two pumps on your palm and apply it to your skin. Use this product to reduce pigmentation caused by sun damage.

Ingredients and Skincare Products to Reduce Dark Spots

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

This ingredient helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and evens skin tone. You can use products containing Vitamin C with SPF and niacinamide to enhance your skin’s glow.

Vitamin C

Applying skincare products with Vitamin C can help reduce hyperpigmentation and even out your skin complexion. Try using EmbraCe Intensive Moisturizing Night Cream. This hydrating night cream provides skin rejuvenation with Vitamin C, reducing the appearance of sun damage and blotchiness while firming the skin. It helps reduce wrinkles and lines caused by skin dehydration.

Instructions for Use: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, such as Sea Botanical Purifying UV Protective Facial Cleanser. Apply a large pearl-sized amount of cream to your face and neck, massaging evenly. For a treatment mask, apply a thick layer of cream, let it sit for ten minutes, then massage it into your skin. Use a warm, soft, wet washcloth on your face to allow the cream to penetrate your pores.

Retinol

A popular skincare ingredient known for reducing hyperpigmentation, retinol accelerates natural skin cell turnover. Consider using MCR Marine Retinol™ Intensive Renewal Serum. This product makes your skin radiant, firmer, and clearer. It’s beneficial for those with mottled pigmentation, deep wrinkles, and lines.

Made with algae rich in carotenoids (a plant version of retinol), it contains UVA/UVB filters that protect against UV damage, reduce bruising, and repair damaged collagen fibers. Dunaliella Salina Extract, a green microalgae, acts as a precursor to retinol, revitalizing the skin. Safe for sensitive skin, it contains sea plant and plant-based retinol.

Instructions for Use: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, such as Marine Guardian™ Sun Protective Phyto Organic – One Step Cleanser. Apply one pump of serum to your face at night, 3-4 times per week, avoiding the eye area.
